Austria’s tallest trees in Lammertal Virgin Forest
Hike out to our ca. 10-hectare forest nature reserve, in which firs, spruce, beech and larches grow to extraordinary dimensions in a practically virgin setting.
The outstanding soil conditions and the favorable hillside location have allowed the trees to grow in an optimal climate to become the biggest trees in Austria.
The “Lammertal Watchman” is astonishing, a 48-meters-tall pine tree estimated to be about 300 years old.
After a pleasant hike, the Spiessalm, which is located just below the Lammertal Virgin Forest, is an excellent place to stop for refreshments, serving up top-quality homemade products and cheese specialties from their very own dairy.
Here, you can enjoy a well-earned snack and take in the sight of these ancient giants one more time.
- Departing from the Seepark in St. Martin, you can follow the Baumwanderweg, a pathway which leads in the direction of Lammertal and to the Lammertal Virgin Forest (about a 2-hour walk).
- If you prefer, you can also drive up to the Spiessalm car park from Lammertal in Lungötz, and then walk up to the tallest trees in Austria (about a 1-hour walk).
For families with children who want to experience an adventure together, every Wednesday from the beginning of July until early September a guided “Virgin Forest Adventure Hike” is offered, accompanied by the mountain guides of “Walk-with us”.
You and your kids will be able to immerse yourselves in the fascinating history of these ancient trees. A variety-filled hike for big & small.
